Worcester a busy market town and a Cathedral city, with the Malvern's in the Southwest and Cotswolds in the east, Worcester is ideally situated as a tourist centre. Worcester's history spans more than 1500 years.

The Cathedral, which dates from 1062, was badly damaged during the civil war, Major restoration was carried out in the 1800s. The Cathedral has many Norman features, also contains the tombs of King John, and Prince Arthur was the eldest son of Henry VIIth

The Cathedral goes back to early Saxon times when the current archeologist Criss Guy states there were two small Saxon Cathedrals/Churches on the site. These were replaced in 1084 by a Norman Cathedral (model can be seen in the crypt today). There are odd bits remaining but the present Cathedral dates from c.13th and 14th Century. My theory is that being a Roman town, the earliest Christian structure or the first evidence of a church could have been placed on the Roman foundations? This would have been a simple Saxon structure. John Hodges.

Boats and Canals site

Worcester has a picturesque cricket ground, situated near the river, overlooked by the Cathedral. Many world class games are played here.
Worcester is also well known for its Sauce, Porcelain, Berrows Journal, and the Racecourse,
The City contains many historic buildings. King Charles House and Nash House is in New street. Queen Elizabeth House can be found in the Trinity. There are several fine examples of 16th century architecture.See Worcester Photos page for pictures

The Severn Britain's longest river the Severn flows through Worcester. The river was a vital trade route from medieval times. Cargoes of wine and foreign goods were shipped upriver from Bristol. Boats returned carrying coal, grain, and hides.

The Worcestershire and Birmingham canal Opened in 1815, Quickly expanded trade with the Midlands; goods were handled at Diglis Basin and at Lowesmoor Wharf. Today the canal is used mainly by pleasure craft.

Worcester Bridge From early times a wooden bridge spanned the river at a ford near dolday. In 1313 the prior of Worcester raised funds for a replacement stone bridge, which was quickly built. It became the main route to Wales. A new bridge was built in 1781, widened and rebuilt in 1841.in recent times a new road bridge has been built south of Worcester.

St. Andrews Spire One of Worcester's landmarks situated near the college, is St. Andrews Spire, 245 ft. high. Locally known as the Glovers needle, was built in 1751.

The Commandery

Situated in Sidbury, a short walk from the Cathedral.
Open throughout the year Mon.-Sat 10am - 5pm Sun 1.30pm - 5pm

Formerly called the Hospital of St. Wulstan 1085-1541 it was the royalist headquarters during the civil war 1651. Fort Royal Park was part of the Commandery grounds at this time, where the fiercest fighting took place, resulting in the defeat of the Royalist forces.

There is an impressive great hall and the magnificent painted chamber, also an exhibition telling the story of this violent period in Worcester's history.
Various events take place during the year, including medieval activity, and battle re-enactments, also ghost hunts and open air theatre.

Peaceful spaces and the Knot garden surround the commandery, a unique building.
